Time and distance are still very abstract concepts to the young child, but they will enjoy imagining a time before cars and planes, TVs and modern technology. This four-week theme takes your class on a long journey across the prairie and over the mountains as they follow the pioneers in the westward expansion of the United States. They will learn about building community and the importance of working together.
With all the letters and sounds the children have been working on throughout the school year, practice begins with creative activities to encourage putting the sounds together to read new words. New sight words are introduced and spelling the sounds that they hear. This unit also provides more exploration of the world around us as they learn about the plants and animals of the prairie.
